Print Release Methods
Last Updated: April 07, 2026
Secure Release Print is a crucial feature in modern printing environments, designed to protect sensitive information and prevent unauthorized access to printed documents. Release methods include the following:
- Badge and PIN: Authenticate with these popular and user-friendly options before releasing a print job.
- QR Code Release: Use a touchless printing option that works with the PrinterLogic app.
- Simple Badge Release: Combine security with ease of use for a printer that does not have a digital display.
- Release Stations: Release a print job from a printer that does not have a digital display.
Additional Release Methods
Additional release methods include the following:
Badge & PIN Management
You can store badge IDs and PINs in either an identity provider (IdP) An identity provider (IdP) is a system entity that creates and manages identity information for an organization and can be authenticated by a computer system or network. An IdP is referred to as a security principal in Java and Microsoft documentation. An IdP also provides authentication services to relying apps in a federation or distributed network. or the Vasion Print database.
IdP Storage
When a user scans a known badge or enters a PIN, the Control Panel Application (CPA) on the printer receives the data and sends it and the printer ID to Vasion Print. The system compares the data using the same connection for user authentication. Then the system sends the associated fully qualified domain name (FQDN) back to the printer if authentication succeeds.
Vasion Print Database Storage
Badge IDs and PINs stored in the Vasion Print database follow a similar process, except that the system compares the data with information stored in the database. The system sends the associated FQDN back to the printer if authentication succeeds. Then the CPA shows the Release page and Pull Print and Direct Secure Release jobs associated with the user.
Not Found
If the badge ID or PIN is not found, the system sends a response back to the CPA that the badge is unknown or the pin is invalid. Then the CPA shows a message to the user that the credentials are invalid.
After you register a badge in Vasion Print, regardless of whether you use the Vasion Print database or an IdP, you cannot remove or disassociate the badge number from the user account in the Admin Console. Instead you must remove the user from Vasion Print, make the change to the badge, and then reprovision.
Next Steps
The following topics explain how to set up badge and PIN management through an IdP or a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and how to manage them if you store the data in Vasion Print:
