SNMP with a Service Client

Last Updated: April 07, 2026

Below are the steps to set up Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) status monitoring using a Service Client.

Requirements

Review the following requirement:

  • A Service Client already configured in your print environment.

If you do not have a device set up as a Service Client, refer to Service Client Setup for complete details.

1. Turn On the SNMP Service

  1. In the Admin Console, select the Service Client's SNMP tab.
  2. Select the checkbox for Enable SNMP Service.
  3. Select Save.
  4. Access the physical device that you designated as the Service Client.
  5. Use the system tray icon or Start menu to refresh configurations.
  6. Open the Task Manager, and select the Details tab.
  7. In the Search field, enter "printer" to locate the Client processes.
  8. Confirm that the following services are running:
    • Client services, which include PrinterInstallerClient.exe, PrinterInstallerClientInterface.exe, and PrinterInstallerClientLauncher.exe.
    • PrinterLogicServiceManager.exe.
    • PrinterLogicServiceSnmp.exe.
    • Other services running on the Service Client also appear.

2. Configure SNMP Settings

These default settings apply to each printer object in your instance. If you want to configure SNMP for only specific printers or want to turn off SNMP for specific printers, refer to the Printer-Specific SNMP Settings section below.

  1. In the Admin Console, go to Tools then Settings then General.
  2. Scroll down to the SNMP Settings section, and select Use a service client to collect SNMP information.
  3. In the Service Client Name: field, select the Service Client object that you want to collect SNMP data.

  4. Complete the following settings:
    1. By default, SNMP monitoring for each printer is: Select On.
    2. Under normal conditions: Enter a number in minutes if you want to update the time interval when the service queries for data under normal conditions.
    3. Under error conditions: Enter a number in minutes if you want to update the time interval when the service queries for data under error conditions.

Admin Console showing General settings and SNMP Settings.

  5. If the printer uses SNMP v1/v2, complete the following:
    1. Community Public (Get) Name: Public is the default.
    2. Community Private (Set) Name: Private is the default.

Admin Console showing General settings and SNMP v1/v2 settings.

  6. If the printer uses SNMP v3, you can complete the following:
    1. Enabled: Select the checkbox to turn on SNMP v3.
    2. Username: If you want to turn on authentication, enter the username that you want to use for authentication.
    3. Security Level: From the dropdown menu, select one of the following:
      • noAuthNoPriv: Select this option if you do not want to apply authentication or privacy settings.
      • authNoPriv: Select this option if you want to apply authentication settings but not privacy settings.
      • authPriv: Select this option if you want to apply authentication and privacy settings.
    4. Authentication Protocol From the dropdown menu, select the hashing algorithm that you want to use to store your authentication key. Options include MD5 and SHA.
    5. Authentication Key: Enter the key for the authentication protocol, which is similar to a password.
    6. Privacy Protocol: From the dropdown menu, select the encryption algorithm that you want to use to secure communication between the device and Vasion Print. Options include DES and AES.
    7. Privacy Key: Enter the key for the privacy protocol, which is similar to a password.
    8. Context Name: Enter a context name. The context name is an octet string, which has at least one management information.
    9. Context Engine ID: Enter the context ID to uniquely identify the SNMP entity. Most SNMP v3 entities use their SNMP engine ID as their context ID.

  7. Select Save in the upper-right corner.

SNMP status monitoring is now turned on for every printer.

Printer-Specific SNMP Settings

The printer object's Status tab contains basic reporting data about the device and the option to configure printer-specific SNMP settings. In the Settings section, a printer using the default SNMP configuration has the Use Global option selected by default.

The steps below guide you through configuring printer-specific SNMP settings for devices that do not use the default settings configured above.
