Basic Steps
Last Updated: October 25, 2026
Basic steps handle the core tasks in a Business Process workflow, such as collecting information, requesting approvals and signatures, storing documents, sending email, and ending the workflow.
Key Points
Review the following key points:
- Use basic steps to build simple, linear workflows in which work moves from one step to the next.
- Combine basic steps with advanced steps to build more complex and robust workflows.
How Basic Steps Work
Basic steps are the cards that you add to the workflow canvas and connect with arrows to define the path that work follows. When you add or select a step, you configure it in a side panel.
Each time a trigger starts the workflow, the workflow runs as a separate instance. The instance moves from step to step along the connected arrows, and each step starts after the previous step completes.
The basic steps do the following:
- Form Step: Presents a form to an assigned or anonymous user to complete and submit.
- Approval Step: Routes a task to a user or group to approve or reject.
- Signature Approval Step: Routes a task to an assigned user to review and sign.
- Storage Step: Saves a document to a connected cloud storage provider. Learn more about what storage provides are available to you and how to configure a Storage step in your workflow.
- Email Step: Sends an email that contains workflow data to one or more email addresses.
- Print Step: Prints one or more documents from earlier steps when the workflow reaches it
- End Step: Closes a path in the workflow or completes a workflow.
Basic steps run in sequence, so they work best for simple, linear workflows. To branch or run paths in parallel, combine them with Advanced Steps.
